MODULE 10: Beyond the UFO Project
Goals:
• reflection mapping, including:
o simple environment sphere
o six-sided cubic mapping
o true reflection camera
• shadow buffers and shadow bias
Assignments:
• Assignment 10.1: Dailies. Please post current progress on all shots that you have not yet received a final, including the green screen project, simple match lighting project, and UFO background plates. Post progress for specific shots to the dailies discussion folder for that particular shot. If you are not posting for a specific shot currently in production, explain why.
• Assignment 10.2: Film Noir Project – FN01. This is your final regular assignment in the class. We go back to the studio and shoot some additional foreground footage to be match lit to an old black and white film background plate. Length is up to you. May contain a move or can be locked off. Post requisite turn over sheets to the discussion section.
Discussion:
• Discussion 10.1: Examine the frame. Can you spot at least five visual cues that would help you light an object to be placed somewhere near the Styrofoam factory? Consider the nature of the light: is it direct or diffuse? How can you tell? Are there any objects in the frame that bespeak lighting direction? What is the color of the diffuse light? How about the color of the specular light? Does shadow direction tell us anything about the light? Shadow color? Haze?
• Discussion 10.2: VFX Sequence of the Week. This week’s VFX pick is from the film Minority Report (2002), directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Cruise and Max Von Sydow, with post-production effects by Industrial Light and Magic (VFX Supervisor: Scott Farrar). Please watch this clip with instructor commentary and discuss the strengths and weaknesses (if any) of the shot(s) presented.
