I am beginning to think about my thesis. Creativily I have started the process of story ideas. Technically I know I want my thesis to be done in widescreen High Definition. My knowledge of cameras and such is minimal so I started this thread so we could all share our knowledge and resources. This is what I know I will be aiming for so far: 1920 x 1080 resolution , Progressive Scanned, 30fps. I spoke with Mike, who was our green screen helper, and he mentioned that it costs about the same to rent a 35 mm as it does to rent a high quality digital camera. He also said that with digital, the price usually comes with a technician to help with your shoot. There are also a bunch of "prosumer" HD cams in the 3000-6000 range, but none of them do all the above mentioned requirements. Most of em are interlaced. I am willing to spend on high quality video, but going "prosumer" may be the financial compromise I may have to make. JVC makes a camera with progressive 1280 x 720 (720p) which is still a high resolution. Here are some good links if you are interested in learning more. It's kind of like an HD add-on to "Filmmaker's Handbook". Please share any insight or information you have on this subject. www.urbanfox.tv/articles/cameras/c33hdv_review.htmlwww.internetcampus.org/tvp009.htm

I had my eyes on the HD cameras for some time now. But it seems to me that high prices are not showing any signs of going down. I wish I had the ability to purchase that HD 3 chip "Sony" piece. I really like what "Sony" has to offer and by working with their products before, they are pretty reliable. I really wish I had one of their professional DVcam decks. This kind of 'toy' is very useful when it comes to digital capturing.

I have spoken to a VFX Grad student approaching his midpoint, and he plans on shooting in 35mm... but I am not interested in film. So I'm wondering the cost/practicality of shooting in hi def.
It's still so new that I wonder if it is practical. I also wouldn't mind playing with a "Prosumer" camera to test the quality. If I find out rental prices in SF for a pro or prosumer HD cam, I will post... it's never too early to start worrying about budget!

hey George, for best quality I would say rent a pro hdtv, and stay away from prosumer, Cannon is the only prosumer outfit that makes a camera that shoots in frames, rather than fields, others hav what they call progresive scan, 100% crap, its fields with a filter. Cannon's gl and xl camera shoot is frames which means it shoots 30 digital images a sec without interlacing. however if it will be a year or so before you shoot, wait and rent or buy the cannon xl1h, it isn't out yet but it is set to shoot hd, in a true frames mode.
