Q: What is Global Illumination?
GI is illumination that takes into account light transmitted from other objects. In real life, objects can be illuminated by indirect light, light reflected off of another surface, instead of coming directly from a light source. EX: A light is aimed at the ceiling of a room, light is reflected from the ceiling and would illuminate (indirectly) the floor and the walls.
Without using a GI tool, an ordinary renderer or raytracer would only illuminate the ceiling and brighten the upper walls. The rest of the room would be left dark.
Types of GI: Radiosity, Photon Mapping and Caustics.
