Q: How do I use a reference image in Maya to set shadow positioning? A: Add an image to your camera plane in Maya.
Make sure that you're using an image with dimensions that are integer multiples of your camera dimensions. easiest way to do this is if you're rendering at 1K (1024 x 768, say) make sure that your reference input image is the same resolution... or a multiple. if not, maya will squeeze your image to fit.
If this isn't possible, tell maya not to squeeze the image plane, but center it instead. go to camera attribute editor --> enivronment and modify the image plane attributes.
For multiple frame references, (using a .mov for a background reference, for instance), click the use image sequence box and use a formula in the Image Number input box: =frame. =frame will substitute the current maya frame number for the image index. this way, you can use multiple frame references.

Q: How can I get Maya to render out separate render passes (diffuse, specular, shadow, etc.)?
A: In the Render Globals Window, select the software tab.
Q: How do I create a new render layer?
A: Click on the Reveal Display/Render Layers icon (next to the Attribute Editor icon near the Channel Box)
1. From the Display/Render Layers dropdown menu, select Render Layers and create a new render layer.
2. The new layer is added to the maya software render tab in the render globals window.
3. Select the checkbox attributes for the new render layer. Typically, you will want to split out specular, diffuse and shadow passes. In any case, when you use render layers, disable the beauty attribute, since this is, by definition, all passes together.
