MODULE 2: Visual Effects: On the Set
Goals:
• crew roles on the set
• background plate selection
• green screen stage lighting
• selecting a digital camera
• the green screen shoot
• rough blocking strategy
• dailies and production protocol
Assignments:
• Assignment 2.1: Those of you who have access to a green screen facility, or intend to construct a green screen/blue screen according to the directions presented in this module, will shoot a foreground plate to be placed into a background sequence of your choosing.
• Assignment 2.2: Please make a turnover sheet for this project. Use the turnover sheet template included with the CD in the folder associated with this module, or make your own, but make sure that all requisite information is provided.
Reading Assignments:
• The Filmmaker's Handbook, Chapter 7, The Video Image, and Chapter 8, Shooting.
Discussion:
• Discussion 2.1: Have you thought about what kind of thesis project you’d like to pursue? Will it feature a story that you’ve been thinking about bringing to life for many years? Was it inspired by your favorite piece of art or animation? Will it showcase your strongest skills?
• Discussion 2.2: VFX Sequence of the Week. This week’s VFX pick is from the film Pearl Harbor (2001), starring Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale, with post-production effects by Industrial Light and Magic (VFX Supervisor: Eric Brevig). Please watch this clip with instructor commentary and discuss the strengths and weaknesses (if any) of the shot(s) presented.
