MODULE 4: Green Screen Compositing
Goals:
• introducing the four edges approach to foreground blending
• adding simple reflections
• rebuilding set lighting
• advanced color correction
• faking depth of field
• the procedural cucoloris
• advanced edge treatments
Assignments:
• Assignment 4.1: Dailies. Please post current progress on all shots that you have not yet been assigned a final. Post progress for specific shots to the dailies discussion folder for that particular shot. If you are not posting for a specific shot currently in production, explain why.
• Assignment 4.2: Pick out a static background, either from a favorite film or a favorite snapshot to be used with the next assignment, Match Lighting. You will be asked to place a color-correct CG object (one that you have rendered) into your single frame using the concepts introduced in modules 1-5.
Discussion:
• Discussion 4.1: Please choose a feature length film with visual effects and present the following information: the title of the film, the director, the production effects supervisor (listed above the caterer in the credits), the first visual effects house mentioned in the credit crawl, the visual effects supervisor from aforementioned VFX house. Present your favorite shot from the film you selected and discuss why it succeeded or failed to as a trompe l’oeil element.
• Discussion 4.2: VFX Sequence of the Week. This week’s VFX pick is from the film Independence Day (1996), better known as ID4, starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, with post-production effects by Centropolis (VFX Supervisors: Volker Engel, Douglas Smith, Craig Barron ). Please watch this clip with instructor commentary and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the shot(s) presented.

It is important that the standing lecture be augmented with a vfx discussion forum. Due to the relatively brief amount of time allocated for the introduction to feature visual effects, I felt this addition was necessary.
Present www.imdb.com as a resource, and review the online version of Cinefex magazine.
Discuss mid-term project. All assigned projects will continue to be evaluated weekly by the instructor until deemed "final". Projects will be presented at dailies during the first hour of class time. Students will receive feedback at will modify their shots accordingly, and optionally ask for additional help during the week via the bulletin board system.
The methodology best simulates the production environment, where often a single artist will be in charge of several shots simultanteously.
Discuss the importance of taking direction. Underscore the importance of communication between the production office and an artist. Trust between the artist and the production results in a more efficient production. An experienced artist will communicate forseen challenges with a particular shot weel enough in advance of the delivery date in order to give production the opportunity to shift resources to meet new needs.
Examination and discussion of the visual effects in the short film, "Let Go."
Review green screen composites, match-lighting progress.
