CA3D 626 Notes: October 11, 2007
GS Dailies: Week 6:
Vince (Introduction):
Check out the Encyclopedia of Visual Effects. Put out by Apple (Shake makers).
This class is not a tool class. No grades on tools. Visual power of the tools. You are graded on visual power.
Notes last week were good. Hopefully today we will have finals.
CBB: Stands for “Could Be Better.” Client will noodle to death. Internally, we may final something after client sees it. “Final CBB” means that it could be better. If there’s a chance to work on it later, then do so, after other work is done.
GS01 (GS01_tk11.mov):
Vince:
Where is the slate?
(In take ten. Eleven is for the dissolve)
We always need the slate frame number iteration. You’ll have to be in the habit of doing it. You can copy and paste the slate using Quicktime. Copy and paste the slate and save out the movie.
Pillar Mattes? They are in take ll. Any edge wrap on the inserted character?
(Yes)
Okay.
(Edge blend and edge blur)
Seems a little sharp. One more pixel or so added in the Blur. The color is nice. The mattes look good. Position is good. Seat shadow is good. Looks like there is a drop shadow. It should not be on the tree limb right next to the inserted character. There is also a shadow on the BG. Get rid of it.
FINAL (CBB frames 76-102 has a webbie around character’s legs. Fix with roto. Some shadow in the BG needs to be removed.)
(Please look at take eleven)
Bring the character in over a three frame cross-up/ cross-out fade.
Take off frame numbers. Keep on slate with final and put it in a finals folder.
GS02 (GS02_d_am_tk3.mov)
Everything I say about other’s stuff is also for you. Insightful feedback, here. Margiv and I went on with lens distortion, etc. Paint program in After Effects. We re-scripted the shot. We surmised that the hall was built downscaled to make the girls seem bigger. Not seven foot doors. Four foot doors. Had to change shot so character’s eyeline matches the child’s.
Can you revisit the screenshot of the kid? Can he be scaled and pushed further in? We should talk about this shot. Something more can be done to it.
Eyeline issue needs to be addressed. Character can be closer. There’s a funny matte on the child’s head. Too sharp. Put an indent so it’s not so severe. Kid is soft, character is sharp. Put some softening blur on the character. Color correction issues. Perhaps could put character back to the doorway. Shot looks short. Kid needs to be pushed into the hallway. There must be some shot that shows the entire Big Wheel. Fix the pillar mattes.
(Girls’ Scene)
Needs a light. Inserted character is too dark. Roto or extraction? Color Correction. Atmospherics. Lens distortion. Looks far away.
Naming conventions need to be corrected. Door opening is nice. Let’s talk about this outside of class. Issues that need to be resolved.
GS03(GS03_Csavetanai_tk06.mov)
Eyeline is perfect. Professional actor? Please let me see the reference. This could be a final or more pain.
Character's values are blurring into BG. Character is a little green and the plate is Magenta. Try to find some luminance differences. No luminance keys on the character. Good extraction. No webbies visible.
A flash would not work. Vince doesn’t approve of a camera flash. Not enough wrap on the character when he’s taking the picture. Looks a little cut out. Blur on the character, but use as much on the edge blend.
FINAL (CBB Color correction. Make character’s blacks less green more magenta.)
GS04(GS04_abeyang_tk4.mov)
Looks good. Mali is a little sharp. Floor tiles rack. From frame 488 to end of shot a lot of racking. Mali is really sharp. He must be blurred halfway between floor and doorway. Just a little bit.
A little grainy in the matte shadows.
FINAL (CBB Scale on the head poke. He’s back in the room, so his focus must be blurred on the “peek out of the door” piece. & Fix the shadows problems as they are very grainy.)
GS05 (300_44_tk3_BRL_10-11-07.mov):
I wish the shot were longer. Seeing some strange matte issues. Fix with paint shape. Can see the character falling into a green cushion. May have to construct leg and backside starting at frame 91 to the end.
Good job of color correction. Faux shadows look okay. Fix the shadow split under the kicking foot. Need the shadow effect. Feather the blurs across the other shadows. Do a subtraction on the other shadow.
Keep the original plate shadows if possible. They look good. Having the shadow split doesn’t look good under the kick.
Not yet a final.
Match Lighting Dailies (ML01):
Mai:
Both glasses are CG. Mai has had some raytracing experience. Keep to one glass. Looks great. Refraction. We’ll talk about how to composite. Refractions.
Caitlin:
What is it?
(A statue)
Cues that will help figure out how to composite the shot. Did you record what happened during the day? Take surrounding shots ? Yes. Good. Get some reflections & references. It’s already a bizarre shot. If it were less abstract with people in the picture, it might look good. Not so macro, so there is a reference. There should be an element of realism to compare shot.
Byung / Ben:
Sure you want to use this? Nice insertion of the CG object.
(Modelled the plane and cast a shadow)
Very nice. Color on ball is bizarre. Make the ball as if it’s a mirrored ball and pick up the color from the surround. Is it a blue ball or a bad color correction on a ball? Make the ball red. Sure key light is in the right place? (Yes).
Expect to see more sky in the reflection. Better if sky were reflected in the ball. More contribution from ground onto bottom of ball. More rim and heat on edge of ball. Nice work.
Charles Yeh:
Still working on shadows? (Using champagne) Why not water? Before bubbles and dynamics make the shadows work. Refractions should be in the fluid.
Dan:
(I have the reference) Shot looks fuzzy. You moved during shot. Fuzz will have to be in the CG object. Could be good.
Tim:
Cooklorus: Will be a challenging shot.
Von:
You’re going to put a tiny ball in the shot? Why not put a bigger object in the shot? You could redo the table and the shots. Difference is a little bit too small. You can do shot, but can you make the ball move around the table as they talk? Lost all of the area around the shot.
Javier:
Very cool. Reflection is in the surface of the floor. Floor is dirty, so the reflections are disturbed. Contact shadow under microphone. Looks like we’re on the ground with camera taking shot. We’re seeing a shadow and a reflection. Perspective is wrong. Do the match move from origin and do it from size. Some stuff can be done without cheating. If perspective and camera are right, it can come out a little better. Focus is sharp on the ball. Must be blurred.
Mali:
What is that? (A monster) With a still, it’s hard to tell a story with a frame. It might be cool like Von and turn it into an animation. Instead of a monster, give me another cup. Give something that will sit on the counter. Give me 60 frames of a monster. Nice work.
Abe:
Ball. Good job. The ball is a little glow-ish. Why so lit at the bottom? Palm should be lit, if so bright.
Take off all of the bounce lighting. Key is at window. Wall color. Give the ball without the bright lights. Pick one light source from above and one rim source. More reflections will come out. Make the ball less bright, so it doesn’t look like it is glowing.
Pavin:
You’ll have to figure out how to sit the ball in the picture. Sky doesn’t look real.
Margiv:
Try to get the shadow to match the others. Everything a little brighter. Glass egg or reflective? It looks like the objects are in but the refractions aren’t really working.
A reflective object is less dependent on diffuse light. There wouldn’t be a shadow fall off. Hone reflection so it looks more realistic. Blurrier, too.
