The Academy Members that vote on Oscars are a curious subject. I had never really thought about it until recently. Personally, I thought "Transformers" was a complete no-brainer for VFX this year, I was really shocked. "Golden Compass" was good, certainly, but I didn't get the same jaw-dropping effect as I did from watching "Transformers."
Looking over the list of Nominations/Winners, it seems like the Academy favors innovations in the industry, and movies in general to simply all-around well done work. That makes sense, but again going by this years winner. "Transformers" really created massive robot models to such a magnificent degree, made up of thousands of moving pieces that had to realistically transform into everyday cars and planes. Some of the shots with the robot changing forms between a fighter jet and performing mid-air acrobatics really floored me. "Golden Compass" on the other hand, while very well done, just seemed like more of the same. Another Narnia or King Kong basically.
Past winners like "Gladiator" beating out "The Perfect Storm," "What Dreams May Come" winning over "Might Joe Young," or "The Matrix" beating out "Episode 1" or all equally puzzling.
My initial rationalization for this is that the Academy members must not be knowledgeable in the field, and are just suits that don't really understand what they're voting on, but after a little research, there is actually a Visual Effects subdivision of academy members made up of industry professionals that place the votes.
So I'm really at a loss as to what standards, or guidelines they really go by. I'd like to know at least if it is a panel discussion, or simply a vote they mail in individually.
