Why have you chosen the Academy of Art University? Do you feel that the school has the necessary resources you need to complete your program? I love SF and have been living here for many years. Honestly, I didn't want to look outside the Bay Area. AAU was an easy decision for many reasons: networking, instruction from professionals who work in the industry, portfolios, and providing students with the necessary training/knowledge base to enter the industry with practical skill sets.
What makes you want to participate in the computer graphics industry? Do you watch a lot of VFX films? My lifelong fascination with movies will never die. I began in architecture and shifted to web design. Neither are/were satisfying. For years I have been debating whether or not to "pull the trigger" and give filmmaking a shot. Initially, I was in MPT. This is my first VFX semester and I am excited about it. I switched because I realized that EVERYTHING is shifting to digital, and I would like to leave with a strong focus on post-production... not just VFX but editing as well. As for watching a lot of VFX films? Of course, but I do believe in strong stories and good acting... without which the cool effects just compliment a crappy movie.
What is it about your background that makes you a unique candidate for a position in the computer graphics industry? Would you classify yourself as an artist, a technician, or a little of both? I have a degree in architecture and have a pretty good graphic design background in web dev. Basically, I have a decent eye for what looks good in frame, how to balance subjects, geometric relations, etc. I would probably categorize myself as a little bit of both artist and technician, because I like artistic freedom and learning all the tools to make any insane vision a reality on screen. From web dev, I know how to script, so I am not intimidated by coding... but its really the image on screen that moves me.

Why have you chosen the Academy of Art University? Do you feel that the school has the necessary resources you need to complete your program? The city, the instructors, and the fact that they let me in I came to visit in July and absolutely fell in love with the city. (I've only been here for two weeks, so lets hope the love affair continues.) All of my time spent at the school during my visit were fantastic. It immediately felt like a place I could learn and grow. It seems to me that if nothing else, the school constantly offers lots of resources to it's students. It may all be BS... but I have never had this many people tell me that they were there for me. What makes you want to participate in the computer graphics industry? Do you watch a lot of VFX films? I sort of got my undergrad degree in Film and Video (the college I went to did not have Grades, Tests, or Majors.) After I graduated I ended up in Louisiana working at a really small TV station writing and shooting commercials. I continued writing, shooting, and editing TV spots and corporate videos up until about a month ago. I always enjoyed it, but there was something that I was missing. About a year and a half ago I discovered an on-line training organization called the Pixelcorps. Through this group I got into 3d modeling and have been in love with VFX ever since. Like most everyone else in this class I'm sure I'm constantly watching movies and sometimes Television. There's something about telling a story with moving pictures that really intrigues me and makes me constantly want more. VFX films are great and I love being wowed by the visuals, but VFX is a tool just as much as a camera move. It's meant to help tell the story. But yeah, I watch a lot of VFX films. What is it about your background that makes you a unique candidate for a position in the computer graphics industry? Would you classify yourself as an artist, a technician, or a little of both? I don't really have a traditional "art" background. I do however have a very long history using computers, way back before windows when I was very young. I also have a long history working with cameras and post-production software. I haven't had a job in 5 years that didn't involve cameras and computers in some way. I would classify myself about 65% technician, and 35% artist. I don't have any idea what to do with a paintbrush, but I'd like to think I know a little bit about painting with light.

• Discussion 1.1: Why have you chosen the Academy of Art University? Do you feel that the school has the necessary resources you need to complete your program?
I chose the Academy simply because of all the schools I visited, the Academy of Art had the best student work to show me. I figured that was either because it had superior professors, or that it attracted superior talent. Either of the two are valuable aspects of a learning environment such that I can gain professionally competitive experience in visual effects. The school is more expensive than most I looked at, but in the end I just have to trust that with a better education, Ill be able to apply myself to get a better paying job to accommodate for the increase in debt. The SF bay area is entertaining enough not to drive me crazy. I cant say as much for Pasadena or San Diego.
• Discussion 1.2: What makes you want to participate in the computer graphics industry? Do you watch a lot of VFX films?
I have always been intrigued with how particular shots are achieved. When I was little, the concept of creating those effects seemed unfathomable. The art of illusion is most artistically accomplished in the film industry. I want to be a part of a shot or scene or entire movie that captivates people and just blows them away.
• Discussion 1.3: What is it about your background that makes you a unique candidate for a position in the computer graphics industry? Would you classify yourself as an artist, a technician, or a little of both?
I suppose I have a unique understanding of both the programming or scripting side of interactive media, and the more artistic rendering side. As I understand it this is beneficial for particle rendering. There are also more scripting exercises being utilized to achieve AI in large scale shots like the battle scenes in LOTR where amassing as many live action actors is not feasible. Being able to communicate freely between these departments would maybe be my unique trait at the moment.

Discussion 1.1: Why have you chosen the Academy of Art University? Do you feel that the school has the necessary resources you need to complete your program? The reason why I choice Academy of Art is because after working for 4 yrs in architecture visual, I have gave up my full time job to pursuit my dreams in working for a film company. in regard to having the necessary resources for the program,I am still searching for that answer at the moment, I was wondering before if I could learn all the necessary skills needed for the industry and if not could I study some courses outside and have it credited to my statist at Academy of Art?
• Discussion 1.2: What makes you want to participate in the computer graphics industry? Do you watch a lot of VFX films?
I have been involved in art since I was in primary school, when I reach high school I took design and felt in love with it almost straight away. Soon after I was located in university, I choice my major in Multimedia Design, I remember the first 3d intro class I took I felt a connection towards the industry and that makes me wants to do it for a living.
• Discussion 1.3: What is it about your background that makes you a unique candidate for a position in the computer graphics industry? Would you classify yourself as an artist, a technician, or a little of both? I would consider myself more of artistic then technician, but recently have strong connection towards the technician aspect of this field. The thing I found interesting is that when I was working at a architecture visual company, I always have challenge myself to do something that is almost impossible to do that a short time frame but I manage to complete on time that to me make me feel interested and keeps me wanting to learn more. I think mistake is part of this field, I don’t mind people making mistake as long as they work hard to learn and fix their mistake after.

Why have you chosen the Academy of Art University?
:DI chose to go to the Academy because I have heard of their reputation and I was very impressed by their facilities when I went on the tour. I also wanted to be in a place where I would feel closer to the industry and where I would be able to make professional connections with people already in the business.
What makes you want to participate in the Industry (VFX)?
Although I am a modeler by trait, I absolutely love doing VFX because of the power and freedom to virtually create anything and everything. With VFX any thing is possible and I love to either alter reality or create whole new worlds, especially when I am able to implement my modelers in to the mix.
What is it about your background that makes you a unique candidate for a position in the post-production vfx industry?
Well for one thing I love movies and I feel that I have a real strong eye for what works and what doesn't based on all of the films I have seen throughout my life. I also am very open minded about new ideas and techniques and I love to try and come up with things that no one has ever seen before. I'm also a stickler for details and it takes a lot to satisfy me, if that is even possible, therefore I always strive for the absolute best in every thing I do.

Why have you chosen the Academy of Art University? Do you feel that the school has the necessary resources you need to complete your program?
Well, I'll go ahead an be honest here... I didn't want to move out of the Bay Area. But I certainly wouldn't be blowing this kinda of cash if I didn't think the program offered the education I am looking for in the VFX field.
What makes you want to participate in the computer graphics industry? Do you watch a lot of VFX films?
I already work in the computer graphic industry. I've been working as a graphic/web designer for a few years now. I enjoy what I do (most days) but I'm looking for more. I have a passion for movies and I'm totally OCD. hehehe... I feel that if I decided to stay in my current field VFX skills will give me an edge over my peers. But if I decided that advertising blows! I have the wonderful world of VFX to play in. Do I watch VFX films? lol! Let's just say... that my answers to that Monday morning question, "What did you do this weekend?" is always the same. I watch at least 3 movies I haven't seen before EVERY weekend. I think the only word to describe my movie watching would be, "obsessed."
What is it about your background that makes you a unique candidate for a position in the computer graphics industry? Would you classify yourself as an artist, a technician, or a little of both?
Hummm... Good question. Well, this will all sound cheesy but oh well. I am what you would call a "jack of all traits." I do anything from photography, illustration, flash animation, photoshop, video editing... You name it, I've probably done it at least twice, successfully. I am extremely hard working (probably too hard working) and I have an eye for even the smallest details. I have the ability to set goals and accomplish them. If I had to classify myself... I probably wouldn't say "techy" but I'm not super "arty" either. I'd probably say a little of both. Because I know a lot of software and I learn really fast how to do technical stuff. (if need be) However, a programmer I am most definitely NOT.

Hi, my name is Hiro from Japan.
Topic 1.1 Why have you chosen the Academy of Art University? Do you feel that the school has the necessary resources you need to complete your program?
Because there are many experienced teachers from Hollywood movie industry, I choose this school. And also the tuition fee was kind of cheaper than other school in my choice but additional course fee as lab fee ($400) is pain on my finance. In terms of resources, we are short of movies (DVD) and updated technical books in library.
Topic 1.2 What makes you want to participate in the computer graphics industry? Do you watch a lot of VFX films?
Jurassic park made me be interested in Hollywood CG industry. I watch most of VFX films made in 1990s and 2000s.
Topic 1.3 What is it about your background that makes you a unique candidate for a position in the computer graphics industry? Would you classify yourself as an artist, a technician, or a little of both?
I used to shoot live action film by my self when I was in high school and undergraduate. I experienced directing, producing, and editing. It helps me to make CG. And I learned Management of business in my undergraduate; I’m familiar with time management and budget management.
