I say Jurassic Park... why.. because it was insane! I was in the middle of the Jurassic period. It was the most ground-breaking film at the time. The effects and CG work still hold up today!! Top Notch Film and Top Notch CG! -g

This poll is pry more preference than anything else. Jurassic Park I think WAS the most important effects film regarding CG, but overall I think Star Wars was the biggest effects film in general...its impact broad and significant in pretty much every way.

Jurassic Park is hands down the best VFX film of all time. Modeling and animation was done beautifully, and the interaction between the creatures and human characters were almost flawless. My gosh, remember the kitchen sequence? When the reptors were hunting down the kids? I can't remember I was that much terrified watching a movie ever since. One thing I noticed though. As Vince mentioned about the skin tone of Jarjar in Starwars, in some parts of the movie (Jurassic Park), the creatures' skin seemed a bit too 'pastel-ish', if that's a word.
Guess, even though FX companies succeed to mimic smooth fluid motion, recreating 100% real looking skin yet remains as a challenge.

If you have a chance this semester, i recommend that you watch all of these seminal vfx films again, and preferably a DVD media on a HDTV monitor . look for the particular shots in the film that might have been effects shots.
if you're watching a DVD on high definition television, can you detect a grain difference?
if you turn up the brightness on your television, do the black in the effects portion of the frame match the practical film black levels?
can you tell the difference between digital and non-digital effects film making? which of the films in this list were optical fx? digital?
watch theses great effects films again with the eye of an industry artist and you'll be glad you did.

This is a difficult choice. For me Jurracsic Park was the film that got me interested in visual effects. When I first saw this film it was the first time that I had ever seen a dinosaur move around realistically. I think that the compositing and the animating were done very well. Before this film all we had were drawings of what dinosaurs looked like and this film brought them to life. I love all of these movies and I watch them time and time again. I love working in this field because I can just sit down and watch a movie and get inspired.

This is most definately a difficult choice... the best VFX movie of all time... I can say that in the digital era, Jurassic Park is the most impactful... but just as A Space Oddysey influenced all movies after it... we could recognize the pioneers such as Metropolis (I just got the dvd this week). I love the Abyss, and am tempted to select it because I think it's beautiful. I could ramble on, but I'll refrain.

I'm wondering why Terminator2 is not on the list. From the current list, I would rather go for Jurassic park. I'll explain the reason later. (Need to organize my thought)

The Abyss is the best VFX movie of all kind. It's easy to say Jurassic Park was the best VFX movie of all kind becuase everyone and their mother like the film as a whole; thatz a gimme. Don't get me wrong I like Jurassic Park and I appreciate the CG But realistically who didnt like the water creature in the Abyss? I feel the Abyss is the most understated film of all CG films and it should itz props. The first facial animation done in CG! The compositing of the water creature was fantastic also. Ever try to render something to make it look like its in water and make it look good? I have and itz freaking hard as heck. Hope this sparks a good conversation, I will be looking forward to the responses.

This feels like an American presidential election regarding the few choices we have and the low quality of some of the movies. However, I must agree with Vince that out of the list Jurassic Park is probably one of the most influential VFX movies I can think of, and one that was miles ahead of the pack when it came to photo-realism. I think that the movie finally was able to create a seamless integration between live action and CG in a world never seen before, efforts that has been tried since the birth of stop-motion, and in that regards its an incredible achievement. Does this make it in my opinion the best VFX movie of all time? Im not sure. Had it not been overshadowed by the terrible sequels I think it would have been remembered in a much more favourable light. At the time, The Abyss was also an amazing movie, and considering my age (around 15 or so) I found it to be really exciting. The effects were very nice, however I doubt that the implications on the VFX industry were as profound as the ones produced for Jurassic. In later times I would say that The Matrix spawned a larger interest for VFX than any other on the list, and the effects used have been copied ad infinitum. I think that in a few years you will find more and more people joining the industry who will claim The Matrix as their inspiration. It certainly had a large array of creative effects and innovations, and is justifiably represented on the list I think. In conclusion I guess I would have to say that I feel that Jurassic Park together with The Matrix are my choices of _candidates_ for a best visual effects movie of all time out of the list provided. Mine would be Star Wars because it was my childhood favorite and because ILM is pretty much the grandfather of the VFX industry, before there were computers to do it for you. (Sorry Jay, I know how much you love this film)

Hehe I like A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and as a kid I played all day with Star Wars figures. Its got its place in my childhood for sure, I guess its too bad that I woke up and realized that there are so many better things out there. Did you guys read that Lucas in his infinite wisdom will (again) re-release all the Star Wars movies in 3D ? Chek out the link here: today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=entertainmentNews&storyID=2005-03-18T085249Z_01_DEN830004_RTRUKOC_0_FILM-3D.xmlI guess the old saying that greed is the driving force of the American economy really holds true... ;D As long as something can make money its being milked to the very last drop. And I thought it was empty a long time ago. Jay.

Ohhh Tiffany Dont say that Im not on to something atleast. Even though its my typical ramblings, at least I try to create some form of discussion here, after all, I thought this was a discussion forum. We can't all agree on everything, that would be too boring. And I like to push the envelope a little, I think thats only healthy once in a while. Cheers!

Ok, Please, say what is on your mind, Jay, fellow classmates, and readers. Fine by me. It is interesting. Jay, you raise some excellent questions/comments. You are right on both counts. One: Different opinions add a lot more to the discussion forum. Two: This is a discussion forum... so discuss. However, comments such as: "I guess the old saying that greed is the driving force of the American economy really holds true... As long as something can make money its being milked to the very last drop. And I thought it was empty a long time ago." is not necessary to get your point across. I believe some tact is in order. My stance on this topic is I will not see these 3-D Star Wars films. Reason: I never liked Stars Wars. Now, for the people who can't wait to enjoy this experience...more power to them. Have a great time. Now, I am pretty sure that money is a motivation for Lucas, Jackson and Cameron etc. This thought entered my mind immediately when I first heard the news. But I also believe that digital projection can add plenty to the movie-going experience. If this helps pave the way for other movies, I rather see, to be projected in 3-d well... I support the effort being made. Have a good day and Spring Break!!! ;D Tiffany
