The Abyss: Sidenote: I have never seen Space Oddysey. So, my answer could be alittle bias. I agree with Sachemxi. The Abyss helped pave the way for all these VFX movies. This movie proved that VFX could be done. It was ground breaking to say the least. Some of the technology used for The Abyss was the foundation for T2, that Nuch asked about, and I would assume inspiration/motivation for majority if not all the VFX movies there after. I also agree The Abyss is underrated in this category. From the list provided, this is my answer. Have a great day. Tiffany

I agree with Jay, George is milking it...but maybe they'll need some entry level VFX technicians! ;D Check this out, a Star Wars video game based on lego people!? www.eidosinteractive.com/games/embed.html?gmid=156I remember a while back, there was a guy who took the soundtrack from Star Wars and stop-motion animated lego star wars people to it. This guys movie is complete with visual effects... (Here it is) www.lswproject.comIt's a big download, but I can upload it to the student drop-off if anyone with a modem wants to watch it next week.

@tiffany Good rebuttle, and you are absolutly right in your reasoning. I think many people will be happy to see Star Wars once again, and especially in 3D. So if that makes people happy then by all means, I guess it serves its purpose. I guess what (kinda) angers me is how Lucas has turned what used to be a good company and good movies into an industry of production of brilliantly wrapped bullnuts. Its become too big, too commercial and my point (regarding the level of greed in the business world) unfortunatly has entered the realm of exploiting a relativly good movie idea. This is where I stray from the mainstream that don't care about these things, which I guess is fine, however unfortunate. jgbidwellThanks for the link to the Lego Star Wars movies. That was awesome The lego Storm Troopers look just too scary. On the other hand, I am just waiting for a cease and desist letter from Lucas to make him take down the website since he is using the original soundtrack for the movies.

I think the jurassic park is deffinatly the best of those films. Its the reason i wanted to get into the buisness and it was so amazing when i saw it for the first time. Also the story was there so it was the whole package, just a great movie.

while the reasons for Jurassic Park sound good but the truth is i picked matrix. when it came out we were all blown by the camera movements, the slowing down and pausing of animation. many movies have duplicated the matrix moves that made it so great, like shrek.
vfx matrix stuff kicked ass! that fact that many people and movies try to replicate and refer to still til this day seems like it made a pretty good impact.
(i also picked this one bc its the only movie on the list i've seen)

wow what a discussion !
im actually split between star wars and matrix... star wars ( together with TRON ) set me off on the wild ride im on right now as far as vfx and film are concerned... and matrix ( until they did the other two parts ! ) was kind of an update to the effects of the original star wars.... and they both had a great story to boot.... again it only reinforced my need to get into the industry....
as far as jurasic park goes... it was a great movie... dont get me wrong... i liked it a lot... but im not that big of a dino fan... so i guess that made me choose the other two...

jay...
the way i look at starwars is that it inspired me when i was a kid... and todays kids need a lot me to get them motivated and inspired... and lucas is kind of doing that with starwars 3D... now money might be an objective but i like to look at the positive side... i hope the next generation will like it as much as i did...
may the force be with u !

If people dont like how the American pipeline works, they can always choose to into another career. I'm tired of the bitterness and negativty. This is the real world, we might not like it, but itz here to stay.

My vote for best VFX is going to Jurassic Park - but not just because of the dinosaurs. I'm ripping this straight from the DVD special features, but one of the most evolutionary effects from that film was some digital doubles and digital replacement (speciffically of the little girls face over the stunt double's body during several raptor scenes). I think shots like this are what really helped push the digital revolution (forgive the cliches) in the industry.
Only a few movies need creature effects, but any movie could use digital replacements/tweaking. To me these are more fascinating effects. Sure Godzilla might look impressive, but I'm more intrigued by subtle stuff like false sunsets in "The Truman Show", depression-era dustbowl look of "O Brother Where Art Thou", and the math visuals in "A Beautiful Mind".
I think the big FX heavy movies are what keep the big guys in business, but it's the small artsy work that will hopefully keep us all employed and satisfied.

The best VFX movie of all time for me would have to be Jurassic Park. It was the first movie that I ever seen that had cool, belivable dinosaurs. I think I saw this movie when I was in the 5th grade, I couldn't belive how they made them look so real, espically the raptors towards the end. I think that was the most scariest part of the movie. I don't think that the other movies on the list are that well at VFX because I like to see a lot of CGI when I see SCI FI movies, I guess I'm just New School. However If I made the list I would have to include Star Wars Episode II, only because I like seeing the CGI Yoda in action. He was the reason I started watching Star Wars when I was a kid. Although the puppet Yoda was cool for its time I think that The CGI Yoda helped make the SCI FI Star Wars series more interesting, and I am sure Episode III will blow Episode II out the water.

Jurassic Park would be the best VFX motion picture of all time because the film stands a turning point of CG movie development. The awesome creatures can live vividly due to the enormous CG elements composited with the live action footages instead of the stop-motion techniques. That's a great film.

This feels like an American presidential election regarding the few choices we have and the low quality of some of the movies. However, I must agree with Vince that out of the list Jurassic Park is probably one of the most influential VFX movies I can think of, and one that was miles ahead of the pack when it came to photo-realism. I think that the movie finally was able to create a seamless integration between live action and CG in a world never seen before, efforts that has been tried since the birth of stop-motion, and in that regards its an incredible achievement. Does this make it in my opinion the best VFX movie of all time? Im not sure. Had it not been overshadowed by the terrible sequels I think it would have been remembered in a much more favourable light. At the time, The Abyss was also an amazing movie, and considering my age (around 15 or so) I found it to be really exciting. The effects were very nice, however I doubt that the implications on the VFX industry were as profound as the ones produced for Jurassic. In later times I would say that The Matrix spawned a larger interest for VFX than any other on the list, and the effects used have been copied ad infinitum. I think that in a few years you will find more and more people joining the industry who will claim The Matrix as their inspiration. It certainly had a large array of creative effects and innovations, and is justifiably represented on the list I think. In conclusion I guess I would have to say that I feel that Jurassic Park together with The Matrix are my choices of _candidates_ for a best visual effects movie of all time out of the list provided. I have to agree that this seems like a tough decision being that there are other movies that i would choose such as House of Flying Daggers or other recent movies that i have seen... I am not a person who necessarily chooses the movie that has the MOST VFX. I typically will choose a movie that has great cinemephotogrphy as well as a film that has great colors coupled with inpiring VFX. I am sure that people love watching movies with me as i will pick all these things out and become very vocal about them hehehe...
The first movie out of this list that i would have to choose is the Matrix. It was the first movie to really grab me with its VFX. I do agree that Jurassic Park was on the top of the list as far as being able to create a conceavable environment.

Ohhh.... that was a very tough call. But I have voted "Jurassic Park". I had a tough time to decide between "Jurassic" and "2010". The reason I gave my vote for "Jurassic" because it was the film that 'announced' to the world the cgi visual effects proccess. Strange, but a lot of people think that it was "T2" that brought the cgi visual f/x to the world.
