Hello y'all. All of us are talking software, web pages, movies, plugins, xyz, Uv's and mel scrpting. I got the feeling that we forgot one important issue - The Hardware! I decided to open this new thread because I don't know where the hell to purchase hardware and where I might get a discount for being a student at AAU. So, for that matter I open this thread, hopefully to get feedback from all of you that know where and what. This is for all the students that need hardware, but don't know where or what. My first question is : Where in Down town SF I can get good hardware ( HD's, scanners and more) ?

this is a really good question, I've found that the best place to get you haardware on the cheap is to get it online. ebay is the best place for used gear, b & h photo video is the best place for new cameras, lighting, and sound equipment, but if your just looking for hard drives, you local best buy is probably your best bet. they buy in bulk and are able to undercut everyone else. to bad SF doesn't have walmart, walmart is the best place for dvd-rs cd-rs and dv tapes. as well they have a hell of a dvd collection. sometimes you can get some good deals on burners and drives.

Thnx for the tip Jason. But one thing kind of bothers me... If you buy hardware stuff on Ebay, how do you know that what you get is working? If I buy a Hd ( for example ) second handed on Ebay, how can I be sure that I won't get a defective piece ?

I would recommend newegg.com for the cheapest prices... I go to CompUSA if I need something in a hurry, as they are kind of pricey,,, i really dont know of any others... If I find some I will definitely post.
In San Diego I used to go to Fry's, i wonder if they have one in the bay area that's accessible by train...anyone?

Michael, it is always a risk, but I believe most people are honest. Everything I’ve ever bought on eBay has worked fine. There are some protections, with both eBay and pay pal. But yes there is bit a risk. Read their feedback, and go from there.

Thanks Jason, I think that these are some good points about online shopping on ebay.

I just remembered that my Editing teacher recommended a store near our school called Central Computer.. i believe it's between 4th and 5th, I forgot the cross street. He said they have cheap prices there... If you go before I do, let me know what you think, as I need to buy a hard drive.

Check the latest prices at DELL online. Seriously, why mess around with mix and match component one-off hell? Configure your rig: dual proc, 3+GHz, make sure you've got a good graphics card (NVIDIA geforce4 mx420, 64-128MB video RAM, 1GB main mem, firewire, usb 1.0,2.x, DVD, CD+-, ethernet, 300GB storage, 4x6 wacom tablet, tube monitor (don't get flat screen -- color depth sucks).
The age of Radio Shack, soldering irons, EBAY and pawn shop niggling is over. Buy a solid rig from a national distributor and revel in the cost savings and support.

Seriously, why mess around with mix and match component one-off hell? Because its fun to build your own machine ? Sometimes, the shops use an on-board Mother boards with everything on it. To use that kind of boards is just stupid.

putting together your own pc can be fun, personally I'm a mac person, and now that I live on a boat i'm a laptop person, and while i could mix and match a laptop, It wouldn't be cost effective or work as well as my powerbook.

the age of ebay is just getting started, and its thinks to people who buy the "solid rigs" as 6 months after they buy them they are no longer as solid as the new rigs, so out with the old and in with the new.

I guess that putting together a laptop is much more expansive than a regular desktop pc due to the higher prices. Oh man, living on a boat sounds like a great fun
